Munster Technological University Societies came out as winners at this year’s Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) Awards taking home an outstanding two awards.
BICS is a national organisation that was founded in 1995 and whose role is to provide a national forum for the societies in Ireland’s Universities, Colleges and Institutes of Education.
BICS continues to grow, and they now have 18 colleges, 742 societies with 50,000+ students represented across Ireland. They act as an information resource and support mechanism for society administrators, promoting the sharing of ideas and the implementation of best practice.
Student societies are a path to a greater experience of higher education to build friendships which will last far beyond your college years and gaining skills which are just as valuable as you any you will learn in a lecture hall.
Despite the unprecedented challenges faced by all of us across the past two year, due to the hard work and dedication of all of our members we managed to hold our annual awards in person this year, it being the first in person Board of Irish College Societies event since 2019. It was very wholesome for students that managed to function as an organisation despite the fact that Covid 19 went against some of the most basic tenets of student life; people coming together with shared interests.
Representing MTU, there were students from a vast variety of societies such as BANG FM, Manga Anime & Games, Civil & Structural, Board Games & Pool, NAG Nursing & Agricultural Students and of course winners Women in STEM & Programming Societies.
After an in-depth application process involving an application form, a portfolio and interview; Munster Technological University excelled in two categories:
Best Society (Charity / Civic) Small College – MTU Women in STEM Society
Best Society (Departmental) Small College – MTU Programming Society
Societies Officers Kevin Ross (Kerry Campus’) & Aoife Kelliher (Cork Campus’) both expressed how societies have had a great year and the accolades at the National BICS Awards are a testament to their excellence. With entries from across all our 7 campus’ they are delighted that all of their societies have made their mark on the society calendar.
Over 300 students attended the 2022 BICS awards ceremony last night, Thursday 7th April 2022 which took place at the Clayton Whites Hotel, Wexford.
