It was recently announced that Prof. Karen Uhlenbeck, who supervised IT Tralee Professor Brendan Guilfoyle during his doctoral studies in Texas, has been awarded the Abel Prize in maths - the first woman to have been awarded what is considered the mathematics equivalent to the Nobel Prize.
Professor Guilfoyle, who became one of the first academics at the IT Tralee to receive professorial designation at the start of March congratulated his former supervisor. “I am proud to have been a student of Prof. Uhlenbeck who pioneered geometric analysis, developing techniques now commonly used by many mathematicians. This award is extremely well deserved and I believe the strong guidance she gave me during the course of my studies has contributed to my own success as a lecturer and professor at the IT Tralee.”
Prof. Guilfoyle keeps in close contact with Prof Uhlenbeck and has worked with her as recently as December when he was asked to contribute to a paper to be published in an international journal in her honour.
